91大神 3 鈥� Institute for Health Computing

Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to tell you about a compelling new collaboration that builds on the 91大神, Baltimore鈥檚 (UMB) 10-year MPower partnership with the 91大神 College Park (UMCP) and accelerates it to a whole new level. 

UMB and UMCP, in collaboration with the 91大神 Medical System and Montgomery County, Md., announced a transformative new medical research and academic institute that will use artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, and other emerging technologies to improve health care in Maryland. We expect the new institute to leverage recent advances in AI and computing to create a premier learning health care system that evaluates both de-identified and secure digitized medical health data to diagnose, prevent, and treat diseases in patients. 

Dubbed the 91大神 3 鈥� Institute for Health Computing, or UM-3-IHC for short, it is the latest strategic initiative of MPower, which brings together the complementary strengths of UMB and UMCP to strengthen Maryland鈥檚 innovation economy, promote interdisciplinary research, and create more educational opportunities for students. 

The institute will catalyze a clinical data science ecosystem in North Bethesda that attracts Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health investigators; UMB and UMCP faculty, medical bioinformatic educational programs, and students; and industry partners, allowing for the expansion of computational 鈥渄ry鈥� laboratories, virtual meeting rooms, and classrooms. The institute is expected to open in leased space in early 2023, with final completion of laboratory and office space at the location near the North Bethesda Metro station in 2028.

This new institute embodies UMB鈥檚 core values of Innovation and Discovery, and we look forward to the exciting advancements that will come from UM-3-IHC.
