The Non-Instructional Productivity Survey captures faculty activities outside the classroom, such as research, service, and administrative responsibilities. All full-time faculty members at every USM institution must complete the survey each year.

, in conjunction with budget analysts from the and the , developed the Non-Instructional Faculty Productivity Report to measure faculty activities outside of the classroom. 

Who Completes the Survey

  • Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Social Work, and Graduate Studies: Survey completed via the online system supported by the School of Medicine Department of Information Services.
  • Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy: Survey completed through internal school systems.

Survey Period

The survey covers activities from June 1, 2024 – May 31, 2025. All full-time faculty employed as of December 31, 2024 are required to participate.

Access and Submission

  • Login: Use your UMID credentials through the UMB Portal (Single Sign-On). No separate ID or password is needed.
  • Time to Complete: Approximately 2 hours. Prepare answers in advance to avoid timeouts.
  • Submission Deadline: July 18, 2025. Department chairs or deans will review and approve responses.

Key Areas of Survey

  1. Scholarly Productivity: Books, journal articles, creative works, and presentations.
  2. Professional Service: Editorial roles, peer review, association leadership.
  3. Institution and System Service: Committee participation and administrative contributions.
  4. Public Service: Professional activities with K–12 schools, government, nonprofits, or businesses.
  5. Inter-Institutional Collaboration & Distance Education: Collaboration across USM institutions and remote teaching activities.

Important Notes

  • Professional Area: Only include activities relevant to your professional expertise.
  • Books: Exclude self-published “vanity press” works.
  • Days of Public Service: Each day equals 8 hours of activity. Include unpaid and professional service, excluding regular clinical charity care (unless provided through special programs).
  • Collaboration: Only include joint work with faculty from other USM institutions.

 

Viewing, Printing, and Resubmission

  • Surveys can be viewed or printed before and after approval.
  • If a survey is returned for revision, previous entries and reviewer comments will appear. Update as needed and resubmit for approval.

  

Survey Definitions

  • Books
    Include authored or edited books. Do not include books you paid to have published ("Vanity Press").
  • Peer-reviewed works
    Include peer-reviewed scholarly works such as journal articles, book chapters, poems, and short stories.
  • Non-peer-reviewed works
    Include non-peer-reviewed publications such as newspaper articles or other works published by commercial or non-commercial organizations.
  • Creative works
    Include juried and non-juried creative or scholarly activities. Examples include:
    • Television, radio, or online interviews or appearances
    • Web-based contributions (e.g., blogs, Wikipedia edits, professional websites)
    • Clinical simulation design
    • Curriculum development
  • Presentations and awards
    Include peer-reviewed or invited presentations at conferences, seminars, or events sponsored by professional or disciplinary organizations.
    Include awards from external professional or disciplinary organizations that provide national, statewide, or system-wide recognition for you, your program, or your institution.

  • Peer review and editorial work
    Include manuscripts reviewed for professional journals, conferences, or academic presses.
  • Editorial roles
    Include service as editor, associate editor, area editor, or editorial board member for professional journals.
  • Association leadership
    Include leadership roles in professional associations or societies (national, regional, or local), including committee chair or vice chair positions.

  • Committees: Department, institutional, or system committees you participated in.

Definition of a day
One day equals 8 hours of service (continuous or accumulated).

What to include
Include public service activities that use your professional expertise, including consulting and outreach to:

  • K–12 schools and community colleges
  • Government agencies
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Businesses

Examples

  • Presenting to a medical society
  • Speaking to a civic or professional group

Medical faculty guidance

  • Do not include routine patient care provided through normal clinical practice
  • Include charity care only when provided outside normal practice, such as:

Community health fairs

  • International aid or service activities

  • Collaboration with other USM institutions on teaching, curriculum, or scholarly work.
  • Report distance education courses taught to off-site students.
