The Cost of Attendance (COA) is determined by a student's program type, enrollment, residency status, and living arrangement. The COA includes both direct (billed) and indirect (not billed) costs associated with a student's program. The COA also dictates the maximum amount of financial aid a student can receive for an academic year. Students can view their Cost of Attendance by logging into SURFS, navigating to the Financial Aid Dashboard, and selecting the Award Offer tab.

**The University Student Financial Aid office is obligated by federal regulation to ensure that students are not receiving aid that exceeds their total cost of attendance. University Student Financial Aid reserves the right to make necessary adjustments to offered and/or disbursed financial aid due to changes in the student’s enrollment, residency reclassification, or receipt of additional funding.**

  • Direct Costs

Direct costs are mandatory expenses billed directly to the student and appear on the student bill. Tuition and fees vary based on a student's program, enrollment, and residency status. Students can view program-specific COAs by selecting their school and program.

    Includes:

    • Tuition and Fees
    • Mandatory University Fees (for most on-campus programs), including:
      • Campus fees (technology fee, Student Government Association fee, UMB shuttle fee, student activities fee, student services fee, Campus Center infrastructure fee)
      • Matriculation fee (for incoming students)
      • Student accident insurance fee
    • Student Health Insurance (charged to all full-time students unless proof of comparable coverage is provided; waivable through Student Health Insurance)
    • Mandatory Program Fees (varies by program)
  • Indirect Costs

Indirect costs are expenses a student may reasonably incur while enrolled but are not directly billed to the student. These expenses vary from student to student based on program and personal circumstances. Accepted financial aid can be used to cover indirect expenses. Students who have accepted aid for indirect costs will receive a refund once all direct (billed) costs are paid in full each term.

    Includes:

    • Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment (such as textbooks, uniforms, and educational equipment)
    • Licensure/certification costs (including costs for obtaining a license, certification, or first professional credential required by the program)
    • Transportation (travel between home, school, and work, including clinical or program-related travel)
    • Federal Direct Stafford Loan and Federal Direct Grad PLUS loan fees
    • Living expenses
